Paid Outdoor Advertising
To place a PETA outdoor ad or public service announcement (PSA), go to the MediaCenter. Click on Outdoor PSAs for traditional billboards, and Other PSAs for options
including ads on the tops of taxis or the sides of buses, ads at bus stops, and
flyposting. Many of our print ads can be made into billboards as well.
Warning: Outdoor ads are typically a very expensive way to advertise. Billboard advertisers, for example, have to pay monthly fees for the billboard space in addition to the production costs of the artwork for the space.Billboards are the most common form of outdoor advertising and can run from $700 to more than $10,000—depending on the location—per month. The advantage of a paid billboard is that you can choose the location and determine (within your budget) how long it will stay up. Billboards make a big impact and tend to get the attention of the media—which allows us to get animal issues into the news. Should you choose to put up a paid billboard, your donated dollars will be put to good use.Public Service Billboards For billboards that are not considered controversial, you can request PSA space. That is, when billboard companies have unsold billboard space, they often provide the empty space for the use of nonprofit organizations free of charge.
The nonprofit organization, or, in this case, the activist, is only responsible for the production of the artwork. Depending on the size, the cost can be from $300 to more than $1,000 per billboard. The advantage with PSA billboard space is that it is free. The disadvantage is that you cannot choose how long it stays up or where it will be posted.Once you have determined which type of outdoor advertisement you want to place and which PETA ad you would like to run, look in your local yellow pages under "outdoor advertising." Call companies that offer the type of advertising that you are looking for, and ask to speak to their account representatives. Tell the representatives that you are interested in putting up a billboard, for example, and ask them for a list of available boards and prices (if you are interested in a paid billboard) or ask if they have any available PSA space (if you are looking for donated space). They will help you from there.
