DIY: Cruelty-Free Easter 'Eggs'

Dyeing eggs isn't all it's cracked up to be. The egg industry is responsible for the suffering of more than 280 million chickens every year. And cruelty aside, dying real eggs isn't nearly as much fun as making our DIY papier-mâché Easter "eggs." Find out how to make your own here!

This easy craft is perfect for children of all ages, and you likely have many of the supplies already. If not, don't worry! Everything you need is easy to find at your local dollar store.

Ready to make your own? Here's how:

1 cup flour
2 cups water
1 pinch table salt
1 large mixing bowl
Balloons
Tissue paper, cut into small strips
Optional: ribbons, string, sequins, glitter, yarn, glue, and any other decor you might want!
Clothespins

  • Mix the flour, water, and salt in a big bowl until smooth.
  • Blow up a balloon until it is egg-shaped and the desired size.
  • Using either a paintbrush or your fingers, spread some flour mixture on the balloon. Dip strips of tissue paper one at a time into the mixture and lay flat across the balloon. Continue until you have covered the balloon completely. Repeat with 6 to 8 layers of tissue paper.
  • When you're working on the final layer, use your imagination and decorate it! Patterned tissue paper, glitter, yarn, sequins, and string make great additions.
  • Use a piece of yarn and hang your balloon using a clothespin or set your "egg" on top of a cup. Let harden for 8 to 12 hours.
  • Pop the balloon using a needle and remove the deflated balloon.
  • Fill with Easter grass and vegan candy.
