• Megan Park Storms Parliament for Elephants

    Written by Michelle Kretzer

Members of the Ontario Provincial Parliament might not have been expecting to get a personal visit from one of the stars of The Secret Life of the American Teenager when Megan Park knocked on their door. But the Ontario-born actor wasn't there to sign autographs; she was there to hand-deliver a letter she penned to Parliament on behalf of PETA asking for the legislators' support of Bill 69—the Elephant Protection Act.

Thank you to One Eye Productions

This historic piece of legislation would ban circuses and zoos in Ontario from using bullhooks (which resemble fireplace pokers), electric prods, and other weapons to beat elephants into submission and force them to perform confusing and uncomfortable tricks. The bill would also prohibit circuses or zoos from tethering elephants except during transport or veterinary procedures. When Zoocheck Canada asked for PETA's help in getting the bill passed, we and Megan were both excited to jump on board. In her letter, Megan stressed the urgency of Parliament's passage of the Elephant Protection Act:

Make no mistake: There is no other use for a bullhook than to inflict corporal punishment or evoke memories of beatings in order to intimidate elephants into performing. … Elephants deserve our respect, kindness, and protection. I implore you to make the compassionate decision to support the passage of Bill 69.

Join Megan in asking Ontario legislators to support the Elephant Protection Act.

  • 'Secret Life' Star's Seal Appeal to Canada

    Written by Michelle Kretzer

As Canadian Sen. Mac Harb prepared to address the Senate about his bill to phase-out the seal slaughter last week, he got some unexpected support from another well-known Ontario native.

The Secret Life of the American Teenager star Megan Park is proud to hail from Canada, and she wrote to each senator in her native Ontario on PETA's behalf expressing her support for Bill S-210 and urging the senators to pass it:

Since I play a teenager on TV, I know that young people everywhere are becoming increasingly aware of issues that affect animals, and like me, they don't want to see baby seals bludgeoned and skinned alive to make fur coats.

The Senate voted unanimously to continue debate on the bill. From American teenagers to Russian prime ministers to Canadian actors to British rockers, the world is sending Canada a message that is loud and clear: It's time to end the seal slaughter. If you haven't already done so, please add your voice to the chorus today.

You won't catch Abbie Cornish in fur—or any other animal skins. When asked about her style on Twitter, Abbie responded, "I LOVE clothes … So I love so many different things. Not enough room to tweet! I dress vegan … no leather, suede or fur."

Elsewhere in the Twitterverse, we had animal adoption, a heroic rescue, and vegan chocolates.

Animal-friendly celebrities had a blast showing off their big hearts (and vegan stomachs) this week: Courtney Stodden at the beach with PETA's Vegan College Cookbook, Anne Hathaway at another fun vegan engagement party, and vegan Venus Williams chatting with CNN about the London 2012 Olympic Games.

?uestlove is on a quest to live longer. The Roots star said he is going vegan so that he can be "the first member of the hip-hop generation to live past 60."

Congrats to the animal-friendly cast of The Secret Life of the American Teenager. Season five—starring our buddies Megan Park, Renee Olstead, and, new this season, Twilight's Christian Serratos—premiered to rave reviews.

Is Vince Vaughn a valorous vegan? It's sure looking that way. While filming Neighborhood Watch in Atlanta, he ate mostly vegan foods, and his mom bragged about his healthy lifestyle on The Marilyn Denis Show. We sent the funnyman some cookbooks to give him some delicious new meal ideas.

Maybe Vaughn will be the next Phil Collen of Def Leppard—vegetarian for 30 years and proud of it!

Designer Vivienne Westwood also has a lot to be proud of. Not only does she keep fur-bearing animals out of her designs, the newly minted vegetarian also keeps animals off her plate too.

Sexy vegan Jared Leto is a fellow fur foe. Here's what he and other celebs have been buzzing about on Twitter:

The cast members of The Real Housewives of Miami will need to rethink their furry wardrobe choices with animal defender and supermodel Joanna Krupa joining the show.

  • 'Secret Life' Star Reveals Fur Industry Secrets

    Written by Michelle Kretzer

Megan Park, the star of The Secret Life of the American Teenager, has great fashion sense both on- and off-screen. So, of course, she never wears fur, as she makes crystal clear in a new anti-fur ad for PETA.

Before she was an American teenager, Megan was growing up in Canada and was appalled by the Canadian seal slaughter. With her beau, musician Tyler Hilton, by her side, she chose to reveal her stunning new ad in her native country so that she could encourage fans on both sides of the border to keep fur where it belongs—on animals.

"These animals are skinned alive and kept in small little cages. It's just awful, awful treatment, and there's no reason for it," she says.

Megan and an adorable rescued pup named Tyson remind people that Chinese fur farms often sell dog and cat fur labeled as something else, so if you buy fur, there's no way to know whose skin you're really wearing.

Click here to see the behind-the-scenes video from Megan's photo shoot and join her in getting the secret out: If you wouldn't wear your dog, you shouldn't wear any fur.

  • Giving Thanks for Animal-Friendly Celebs

Nothing says "Thanksgiving" like People's Sexiest Man Alive announcement. This year, the magazine named Bradley Cooper, whose good looks are matched by his good heart. He counts as his greatest loves his rescued mixed-breed dogs.

Speaking of actors and their rescued pups, Booboo Stewart showed up at the Breaking Dawn tent city event wearing PETA's "My Dog Is a Rescue" T-shirt. Booboo is one of several PETA pals in the film, so feel free to use that as an excuse to go watch sexy vampires canoodle on the big screen.

Thanksgiving and football go together like Tofurky and gravy, which is probably what Dallas Cowboys starting fullback Tony Fiammetta will be eating during the holiday. Fiammetta recently switched to a healthy vegan diet, which he says makes him feel better both on and off the field.

Would you invite Bill Clinton to be your Thanksgiving menu consultant? Now that he's vegan and reportedly makes his own cream of asparagus soup, Ellen DeGeneres sought out the former president to sample her new vegan restaurant's menu.

Celebs were a-buzz on Twitter this week, including Megan Park and Carrie Ann Inaba, tweeting about their delicious vegan meals:

ForksOverKnives that is true! Thank you for shedding the light!!! We just had a veggie "sausage" pasta! It was delish!!!! Feeling good!

Other animal-friendly updates came from Emmanuelle Vaugier and Lexie Tomchek, both of whom shared anti-fur messages. Lovely ladies Angela Simmons and Simone Reyes posted several updates about a PETA event they attended at Uncle Rush's house.

And what better way to wrap up a Thanksgiving-themed celeb update than with a few words from longtime vegetarian Sarah Silverman?
