  • Katy Perry & the Stars Shine for Animals

    Written by PETA

We're seeing stars, and we love the fantastic things that they're doing for animals:

    • Stephanie Pratt and her rescued dog get some cover time for adoption.
    • Randy Savage felt the most "macho" way to be buried was with his dog.
    • The Backstreet Boys have quit playin' games with their hearts and adopted healthy new eating habits that chicks love.
    • Katy Perry's concert rider is a hum(mus)dinger.
    • If you can't eat 'em, join 'em. Giuliana Rancic does animals right.
    • As if we needed another reason to swoon over Robert Pattinson, it turns out he gives his rescued buddy doggone good care.
    • Alyssa Milano says being vegetarian with a baby bump isn't bumpy at all.
    • Patrick Dempsey is a McDream come true for his house full of rescued animals.

  • PETA Pals Heat Up Maxim Hot 100

    Written by PETA

Call it "animal magnetism," but we couldn't help but notice how many of the women on Maxim's Hot 100 list look awfully familiar. Olivia Munn edged out almost everyone, claiming the number two spot, but she's number one in our eyes for her defense of animals used in circuses and horses forced to pull carriages—just ask Hoda Kotb

Rubbing shoulders with Olivia on the list is Katy Perry at number three. Ms. Perry became Mrs. Sexiest Vegetarian in the UK when she married Russell Brand, and he might be rubbing off on the singer, who has said that she loves Tofurky. At number five, Mila Kunis is definitely hot, but fur, she says, is not.

Vegetarians liberally pepper the list, including Anne Hathaway, Natalie Portman, and reigning Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity Olivia Wilde

Lea Michele has more in common with Olivia Munn than just talent and beauty—the fur-free vegetarian star has tirelessly campaigned to end horse-drawn carriages too. Near to Lea on the list and in their animal-friendly values is Eva Mendes, who bared her skin for PETA to save the skins of animals killed for fur. And Audrina Patridge is an angel for animals, asking her fans always to adopt from an animal shelter in a PETA ad.

So many of the Hot 100 ladies are doing great things for animals that they were too numerous to mention here, but one thing is clear: Being compassionate makes one beautiful inside and out.

  • Men Find Compassion Very Desirable

    Written by PETA

We just told you about the Fun, Fearless (Animal-Loving!) Males of 2011, and now the girls are getting their turn. AskMen released its 10th annual Top 99 Most Desirable Women list, and so many animal-friendly ladies were included that it can't be a coincidence—it's hot to be compassionate!

Several Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity alums ranked high on the list, including Natalie Portman, Kristen Bell, and reigning Sexiest Vegetarian Olivia Wilde

Some possible contenders for future Sexiest Vegetarian honors are among the Top 99 Most Desirable as well. Lovely Glee star Dianna Agron loves her veggies, and Anne Hathaway recently added fish to her "friends, not food" list, bidding adieu to sushi. Katy Perry has been singing the praises of eating Tofurky with vegetarian hubby Russell Brand, so it might not be long before his diet rubs off on her.

So many of the Top 99 ladies have done public service announcements for PETA that we wonder if AskMen searched our ads for its candidates. Vegan Lea Michele is a staunch defender of horses used in the horse-drawn carriage industry and of animals killed for their fur. Lea's abhorrence of fur is shared by Eva Mendes, who narrated an anti-fur video for PETA, and by Natalie Imbruglia, who starred in an anti-fur exposé for PETA Australia.

Rounding out our picks of delightful, desirable damsels is PETA pal Olivia Munn, who isn't shy about standing up for animals who are abused in circuses and puppy mills

  • Cosmo's Compassionate Cuties

Cosmopolitan magazine just released its list of "Fun, Fearless Males of 2011," and these boys aren't just kind to the eyes, they're kind to animals too.

The Vampire Diaries' smoldering Ian Somerhalder may play a "cold one" on TV, but he won't date a girl who doesn't have a warm heart for animals. The proud pop to three rescued cats says, "I don't care how hot a girl is—if she doesn't like animals, it would be a major, major problem."

And let's gossip for a minute about Penn Badgley's deal-breaker. The Gossip Girl hunk says he can't handle a girl who doesn't love dogs: "I find that if someone doesn't like animals, I am a little suspicious of them." Badgley definitely gets an Easy A from PETA.

PETA pal Chad Ochocinco danced his way onto the list because of his confidence and candor, both of which served him well when he took it all off for his anti-fur ad for PETA.

And the Fun, Fearless Male of the Year? Sexiest Vegetarian in the U.K. Russell Brand, who celebrated Christmas with his wife, Katy Perry, and a Tofurky

A Tofurky and some mistletoe will help to make the season bright, according to Katy Perry. She told the Italian magazine Grazia that she and her new hubby, Russell Brand, plan to celebrate Christmas by gathering 'round a pink (!) tree and extending some peace and goodwill to turkeys by dining on a vegan roast.

What a coincidence—my family plans to do the same thing (except for the pink tree part). Stars: They really are just like us.

  • No Tiger for Russell and Katy

I am not a wedding gift.

Rumors that Russell Brand presented his wife, Katy Perry, with a tiger as a wedding present have been exaggerated, according to the bridegroom himself.

"I'm a vegetarian, you don't give people tigers, it's stupid, it's dangerous, and the tigers don't like it," he told ITV's Loose Women

Thanks for clearing that up, Russell. So for all of you who are planning to attend a wedding in the near future, you can stop worrying about how to wrap up a 500-pound cat. Sponsoring a bullock through Animal Rahat, however, is still the perfect gift for any occasion.

  • PETA India's Wedding Gift to Russell and Katy

Comedian, actor and longtime animal defender Russell Brand married singer Katy Perry in India's Ranthambhore National Park earlier this week and received an unusual wedding gift from PETA India: a formerly oppressed and now liberated bullock.

Named Russell in honor of the groom, the bullock is no longer forced to spend day after day hauling backbreaking loads—he now lives at a retirement center operated by Animal Rahat, a relief program supported by PETA and PETA India.

Russell (the bullock) had been severely overworked and was very weak when he was rescued, but he is now roaming grass fields and enjoying liberation from the heavy wooden yoke that used to press down on his neck as he pulled a cart in the heat and dust.

"Russell the celebrity and Russell the bullock have something in common: They are both very handsome fellows," says PETA India's Poorva Joshipura. "The gift of a namesake is also fitting because just as Russell Brand embarks on his new life as a married man, Russell the bullock has also been given a new lease on life—the heavy loads he once pulled have been lifted from his shoulders for good."

  • Pamela Anderson Bowls Over an Austrian Official--Then Has a Ball

    Pamela Anderson

This past weekend, Pamela Anderson was in Austria with Bill Clinton, Eva Longoria, and Katy Perry for Vienna's annual Life Ball AIDS benefit. But before she wowed the Life Ball crowd in her gold bikini, Pam bared her heart of gold, behind closed doors, to Austria's justice minister, Claudia Bandion-Ortner.

Bandion-Ortner invited Pamela to meet with her after the bombshell's letter urging the minister to stop stifling free speech made front-page news. See, the Austrian police are trying to classify all animal rights groups as "criminals," despite the fact that very few engage in illegal activities. In her letter, Pamela made compelling points against such blanket persecution, noting that the Austrian government seemed to be behaving more like a dictatorship than a democracy. The minister assured Pam that she'd monitor the situation—and that there would be no witch hunt on her watch. Then she stood beside the blonde babe and smiled as staffers snapped away with their cameras.

Pamela and PETA's Dan Mathews then high-tailed it to the Life Ball, where Pam wriggled into her bikini and opened the festivities.

  • Katy Perry's New Year's Resolution

    Katy Perry

We're all about New Year's Resolutions here at PETA. Mine is to quit eating so much delicious vegan junk food and start cooking healthier vegan meals. Pop star Katy Perry had a similar idea when she said, "I try to want to be a vegetarian 'cause I know it would be more of a healthier option for me."

She's right! On average, vegetarians and vegans weigh 10 to 20 pounds less than their carnivorous counterparts, and cutting animals from your diet solves all sorts of other health issues as well. So, if you were thinking about trying to lose weight for the New Year, taking our "Pledge to Be Veg" is a safe bet! Just to give Katy a little extra encouragement, we decided to send her a copy of Skinny Bitch and a basket full of yummy vegan food! Not only that, we sent her a list of vegetarian restaurants to visit on her January 2009 tour. It should come in handy when she's trying to eat healthy on the road.

So kudos to Katy for a smart New Year's Resolution! Not only would her new diet give her more energy to perform, but it's an easy way to save energy, the environment, and animals as well. Happy New Year, Katy!

Do you have an animal-friendly resolution? Let's hear it!
