• Billy Corgan to CPK: Stop Mutilating Calves

    Written by Alisa Mullins

Smashing Pumpkins founder and frontman Billy Corgan is the latest star to speak out against the cruel practice of dehorning cattle. Billy is calling on California Pizza Kitchen to make the responsible and ethical decision to demand that its cheese suppliers stop this barbaric mutilation.

I have viewed the photos and watched PETA's investigative video of these procedures, and I was appalled to see young calves who struggled and writhed in pain as searing hot irons burned their heads. The industry has noted that the burns are so severe that they may damage the underlying bone. Other practices, which include using caustic chemicals to eat away at the horn-bud flesh via a chemical burn, are no better. … I strongly urge you to take immediate action to stop this unspeakable barbarism by requiring your suppliers to phase out dehorning.

Instead of using these excruciating dehorning methods, farmers can instead breed for naturally hornless, or "polled," cattle. Just as farmers select for traits such as coat color, they can select for the hornless gene. And since a single gene determines whether a cow will have horns and the polled gene is dominant over the horned gene, with selective breeding new generations of cows can be born without the gene for horns.

Several other companies have taken steps to eliminate dehorning, and Billy urges California Pizza Kitchen to follow suit. He is one of several celebrities, including Ryan Gosling and Casey Affleck, who want to see an end to this painful, and unnecessary mutilation immediately.

Billy is no stranger to raising his voice to protect animals. He's been a staunch supporter of PETA's Kentucky Fried Cruelty campaign and PETA Asia's campaign to free Mali

    What You Can Do

Please join Billy Corgan in writing to California Pizza Kitchen and urging the company to require its cheese suppliers to stop dehorning.

  • Kimora Joins PETA Protest

    Written by Michelle Kretzer

Our fur protest at New York Fashion Week got legs when Kimora Lee Simmons stopped by. Russell Simmons' Global Grind website tweeted a lovely picture of the demonstration with a shout-out to Kimora and PETA. The fashion designer last showed off her heavenly gams for us in an ad asking people to "be an angel for dogs."

Elsewhere on Twitter, Rosie O'Donnell made us all jealous with a picture of her delicious vegan lunch.

While gearing up for his fashion week runway show, cruelty-free designer John Bartlett told one reporter, "I go crazy when I see people talking about how much they love their dog but they still wear fur—much of the fur that's coming from China is from cats and dogs."

John will fall head-over-leather-free-heels for Nicole Richie's new clothing line: It will use faux fur and fake leather.

People in New York for fashion week are no doubt seeing horses being forced to pull carriages around the city's hot, congested streets. But the horses have a new advocate: Randall, of "that crazy honey badger" video fame, has a new viral video just for the horses.

The Boss's daughter is speaking up for horses, too. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is reportedly a big Bruce Springsteen fan, so Jessica Springsteen is calling on Christie to sign a bill that would ban horse slaughter in the state.

Want some tea and pastries with your alt rock? Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan is opening a tea shop in Chicago that will offer "vegan pastries from all spheres ."

Whoa! Joey Lawrence rescued a dog from a local animal shelter while filming in Australia. He called his new family member "the most amazing little thing ever." Another shelter dog—a pit bull who was rescued from a trash chute—has inspired Newark Mayor Cory Booker to build a new state-of-the-art animal shelter. And to further fight cruelty to animals, the mayor's also a vegetarian.

The Rev. Al Sharpton has made the heavenly decision to cut meat almost completely out of his diet too. And Lady Gaga will have to cut meat out of her wardrobe when she performs for Bill Clinton at the Hollywood Bowl tomorrow. The former pres told David Letterman, "In deference to my diet, she'll be meatless that night."

Speaking of cruelty-free garb, The Veronicas sent flowers to Australian designer Rachel Gilbert to thank her for ditching fur.

And just check out what these compassionate celebs had to say to their Twitter followers:
