Meet PETA's Activist LiaisonsPETA's Activist Liaisons are dedicated to helping you stand up for animals, whether you're a seasoned animal rights veteran or you're planning your first demonstration. With these "super heroes" on your side, there is no such thing as a mission impossible—and remember that giants like General Motors, Burger King, Revlon, and Gap have all changed corporate policies to be more animal-friendly as a result of hearing from people who cared enough to speak out.Megan Hartman, Manager of Outreach Programs Megan supervises the other activist liaisons (with help from pup pal Cinnamon, who accompanies her to work every day), keeps activists up to date with Activist E-News bulletins and posts on AnimalActivist.com, answers your questions, and sends you all PETA's latest campaign leaflets. One of Megan's favorite PETA events is the annual Running of the Nudes, which she has coordinated and participated in twice. "The race has grown from a handful of people to more than 600 participants, which is so exciting to see!" Megan says.
Chris Overton, Vegan Activist Liaison Chris helps activists show people in their communities the horrible ways that KFC suppliers abuse and slaughter 850 million chickens each year. "Many people now organize demonstrations on the first Saturday of each month, while some leaflet a few nights a week," he says. "Every little bit of help means the world to these chickens, who have no one else to speak up for them. And people feel great after pitching in even one hour per month to help protect defenseless animals."
Stephanie Wood, Activist Liaison "Every day, I speak with people who want to get more active for animals," Stephanie says. "I help them organize demonstrations, start animal rights groups, network with activists in their area, organize tabling events and library displays, and send out leaflets and stickers." As part of PETA's TeachKind program for K-12 educators, Stephanie, a former preschool teacher, works with teachers who want to bring animal rights into their classrooms. Stephanie's first activist experience was standing "on the street in Boston handing out leaflets to people on why they shouldn't eat a turkey for Thanksgiving," she says. "Several people were surprised at the information I gave them, and they told me on the spot that they wouldn't have a turkey at their table that holiday. It doesn't take much to have an effect on animals' lives!"
Sisley Aragon-Milroy, Spanish Activist Liaison Sisley fields all PETA's calls and e-mails from Spanish speakers around the world, alerts the Spanish-speaking media to PETA's events, and keeps PETAenEspanol.com up to date. "The challenging and interesting part of my job is that I deal with all kinds of PETA issues—everything under the sun," Sisley says. Her activism is inspired by her dedicated friends, who have done everything from walk into the line of fire during a prairie-dog hunt to demonstrate every Saturday in front of a fur store, rain, snow, or shine. On Your Mark, Get Set, GoNow that you've met PETA's activist liaisons, what are you waiting for? We're at your service to answer questions, provide literature, or spread the word about that demonstration you've been meaning to organize—and any time is the right time to start helping animals! |
