Veterinary Assistant

Position Objective:

To support senior medical staff members and to provide the highest quality of care possible to patients in a humane and professional manner, under supervision

Term of Employment:

Full-time

Reports to:

Licensed Veterinary Technician and SNIP Program Manager  

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Promote the humane care and treatment of animals
  • Assist with admitting patients on a daily basis, including the data entry of client and patient information into the computer
  • Work within established policies and procedures and under the veterinarian’s direction to assist with the restraint of clinic patients during surgical preparation, surgical monitoring, the administration of pre-anesthetic and anesthetic drugs, and post-surgical monitoring of patients through discharge
  • Assist with patient discharge and the daily “shots hour”
  • Assist with inventory management and equipment maintenance, as directed
  • Clean and organize all equipment and supplies every day
  • Comply with the applicable state and federal laws established by the Virginia Board of Veterinary Medicine
  • Sterilize all surgical packs
  • Maintain strict confidentiality about client, patient, and donor information
  • Assist in the maintenance of all program files and records
  • Drive the SNIP mobile clinic to and from spay-neuter sites
  • Maintain a current driver’s license
  • Deliver, set up, and return the mobile clinic each day in a safe and efficient manner and in accordance with established policies and procedures while promoting the humane care and treatment of animals at all times
  • Participate in special events and perform other duties, as required
  • Maintain flexibility in work schedule

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or the equivalent and two years of veterinary clinic experience
  • Good organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail
  • Ability to assess the health and well-being of patients
  • Professional manner in dealing with coworkers and clients
  • Ability to communicate well over the phone, in person, and in writing
  • Ability to lift patients, equipment, and supplies weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to move equipment
  • Ability to provide proof of a good driving record
