Regulatory Counsel
Position Objective:
To provide legal advice on a wide range of issues that arise from the organization’s work with regard to state and federal agencies as well as PETA’s investigations
Term of Employment:
Full-time
Reports to:Senior Regulatory CounselPrimary Responsibilities and Duties:
- Research and interpret federal statutes and associated regulations, including the Administrative Procedure Act, the Animal Welfare Act, the Endangered Species Act, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and the National Environmental Policy Act
- Research and interpret state statutes and associated regulations, including anti-cruelty statutes and open records statutes
- Research and prepare appeals with regard to the federal Freedom of Information Act and state open records statutes
- Prepare comments for federal agencies on proposed rulemaking and permit applications
- Prepare complaints to local prosecutors and state and federal agencies with regard to PETA investigations
- Submit letters to prosecutors and other law-enforcement personnel to encourage diligent prosecution of cruelty-to-animals cases
- Assist caseworkers throughout the organization with a wide array of legal issues that arise in their cases
- Conduct legal research on a variety of animal protection and animal rights issues, such as standing, the doctrine of judicial review, and First Amendment issues
- Work with the Litigation Division to formulate and develop legal action to further the organization’s objectives
Qualifications:
- J.D. with a minimum of two years’ experience in animals rights law, administrative law, environmental law, and/or criminal law preferred
- Member in good standing of a state bar
- Strong legal research and writing skills
- Thorough knowledge of animals rights issues preferred
- Ability to handle multiple tasks with strict time constraints
- Commitment to the objectives of the organization
