Media Coordinator

Position Objective:

To generate media coverage for PETA's campaigns, including campaigns designed to educate the public about safeguarding companion animals during natural disasters and campaigns targeting high school-age audiences with PETA's message

Term of Employment:

Full-time

Reports to:

Senior Vice President and Director of Communications

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Monitor severe weather and natural disasters nationwide (e.g., fires, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes), prepare and route news releases, and make follow-up calls well in advance, if necessary, about safeguarding companion animals during natural disasters
  • Prepare and manage news releases for peta2, PETA's youth-outreach program
  • Pitch PETA campaigns and events to the media 
  • Develop target lists for issue and campaign coverage
  • Develop and make recommendations for new pitch ideas and ways to increase media coverage for PETA campaigns using independent judgment and discretion
  • Assist the Communications Department and other departments requesting news releases
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the senior vice president and the director of communications

Qualifications:

  • Degree in a related field or equivalent experience required
  • Ability to make sound, independent judgments without direct supervision
  • Ability to communicate with a variety of people in a professional and personable manner
  • Proven strong organization skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to take initiative and follow through
  • Proven ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Knowledge of youth culture (ages 13 to 21)
  • Thorough knowledge of animal rights issues and campaigns
  • Support for PETA's philosophy and the ability to professionally advocate PETA's positions on issues
  • Commitment to the objectives of the organization
