Circus Specialist

Position Objective:

To coordinate PETA's circus campaigns to draw attention to and end the suffering of animals used in circuses

Term of Employment:

Full-time

Reports to:

Assistant Director of Animals in Entertainment Campaigns

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Mobilize PETA members and activists through letters, phone calls, and action alerts to contact businesses and sponsors about issues affecting animals used in circuses
  • Educate the public about the humane treatment of animals by writing Web features, action alerts, correspondence, and briefing materials on circus-related topics
  • Present PETA's position on individual cases and animal abuse issues to print, radio, and television media
  • Meet with newspaper editors about various issues related to animals in circuses
  • Work with PETA's Marketing Department to drive traffic to our Web site, and create other interactive online campaigns to increase awareness of the suffering of animals used in circuses
  • Develop and maintain relationships with various experts who can assist with our circus campaign through a variety of networking opportunities
  • Represent PETA and speak about circuses that use animals at conferences and conventions
  • Perform step-backs at least bi-weekly to analyze the success of the campaign and its many facets, brainstorm, or consider issues related to the campaign
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor

Qualifications:

  • Proven exceptional writing, research, and proofreading skills
  • Degree in a related field
  • Supportive position vis-à-vis PETA's philosophy and the ability to professionally advocate PETA's positions on issues
  • Ability to handle cruelty-complaint calls in a professional and confidential manner
  • Good organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize work
  • Ability to make independent decisions in crisis situations that require authority intervention
  • Ability and willingness to travel when needed
  • Must be at least 21 with a valid driver's license and three years' clean driving record
  • Good public-speaking skills
  • Casework-related mediation or intervention experience
  • Commitment to the objectives of the organization
